I am a nurse and I am sixty six. I kept telling myself I would just sit a little longer and then decide.<\/p>\n<p>I put Daniel out when he was twenty two. He had started taking money from my purse and selling things from the house. The pastor at our church pulled me aside after service one Sunday and said it plain.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cSometimes love has to lock the door,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0he told me. I nodded like I understood even though my stomach felt sick. Daniel stood by the kitchen table with a duffel bag that night.\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cMom please do not do this,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0he said. I told him he could not stay anymore. He walked out and the door clicked behind him.<\/p>\n<p>The first year I kept the porch light on every night. I do not know why. I would come home from my shift at the hospital and check the back steps like he might be sitting there. He never was.<\/p>\n<p>Work made it worse. I started IVs on men his age and listened to their mothers cry in the hallway. I went home and could not tell anyone where my own son slept. Some nights I drove around after work looking for him near the old parks. I never found him.<\/p>\n<p>The call came on a Tuesday. A woman from a shelter forty minutes away said she had seen the last name on his intake form and took a chance.\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cYour son Daniel is here,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0she said.\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cHe is been clean thirty one days.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0I asked her how she knew to call me. She said he talked about his mother in the group sessions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"r34c8-ic-ad\" data-slot=\"2\"><\/div>\n<p>I drove straight there after my shift. I did not change out of my scrubs. The whole way I kept hearing her voice on the phone. She said he mentioned my name more than once. He told the group he stole from me and that he wished I knew he was trying now.<\/p>\n<p>When I pulled into the lot I turned the car off and just stared at the door. I almost started the engine again. I told myself he might not want to see me. I told myself the pastor had been wrong but that did not change what I had done.<\/p>\n<p>I finally got out and walked inside. The same nurse met me at the front desk. She looked tired too.\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cHe is in the day room,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0she said.\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cHe does not know you are here yet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The program director came out from the back office. She was younger than me. She asked if I was sure I wanted to go in right then.\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cSometimes they need to make the first move,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0she said.\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cBut you are already here so maybe just sit with him a minute.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"r34c8-ic-ad\" data-slot=\"1\"><\/div>\n<p>I followed the nurse down the hall. Daniel was at a table with a few other men. He looked thinner. His hair had gray in it now. He looked up when we stopped near him.<\/p>\n<p>The nurse said my name. Daniel stared at me and his mouth opened a little. Nobody said anything for a second. I pulled out the chair across from him and sat down. He kept looking at the table after that.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to tell him I was sorry. I wanted to ask if he had been\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-keyword\">cold<\/span>\u00a0all those winters. The words stayed in my throat. He did not ask me to leave but he did not reach for my hand either.<\/p>\n<p>I am still sitting there when the nurse checks on us again. Daniel has not said a word to me yet. I keep waiting for him to look up.<\/p>\n<p>The chair felt hard under me and my scrubs still smelled like the hospital soap from my shift. Daniel kept his eyes on the scratched tabletop. His fingers tapped once then stopped like he was trying not to move at all.<\/p>\n<p>The nurse came back over after a minute. She pulled out the chair next to me and sat down slow.\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cHe talks about you in group every single time,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0she said.\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cMentions how you worked nights and still made sure he had lunch money in the morning. Says he\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-keyword\">used<\/span>\u00a0to wait up just to hear your car pull in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I swallowed and the sound felt loud in my own ears. Daniel shifted but did not look up.<\/p>\n<div class=\"r34c8-ic-ad\" data-slot=\"2\"><\/div>\n<p>The director had already told me sometimes they need to make the first move but here I was anyway and none of it felt like enough.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cHe told the circle about the purse,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0the nurse said quieter.\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cSaid he hated himself for taking from you but the need got bigger than anything else. He still calls you Mom when he talks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>My throat went tight. I could smell the lemon cleaner on the table and the coffee someone had left in a paper cup across from us. Daniel\u2019s hair looked thinner at the temples than I remembered. Twelve years does that I guess.<\/p>\n<p>He lifted his head just enough to glance at my hands on the table.\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cYou didn\u2019t have to come,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0he said. His voice cracked on the last word.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cI got the call,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0I said. That was all I could get out.<\/p>\n<p>The nurse stayed sitting with us. She did not push either of us to say more. Daniel went back to staring at the wood grain and I watched the way his shoulders stayed curled forward like he was still bracing for something.<\/p>\n<div class=\"r34c8-ic-ad\" data-slot=\"1\"><\/div>\n<p>The fluorescent light buzzed steady above the table. I thought about the porch light I\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-keyword\">used<\/span>\u00a0to leave on and how stupid that seemed now.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cI figured you\u2019d hate me too much to show up,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0he said after a while.\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cAfter what I took.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I shook my head but the motion felt small.\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cI should have called around more,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0I said.\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cI should have done something besides listen to that man at church.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Daniel let out a breath that sounded like it hurt. He did not reach across the table. The nurse checked the clock on the wall and told us we had a few more minutes before the next group started. Neither of us moved.<\/p>\n<p>I kept waiting for him to ask me to leave. He kept waiting for something I could not name. The room stayed quiet except for the low voices from the hallway and the scrape of a chair being pushed back somewhere else in the building. My back ached from sitting so straight but I stayed right there with my hands flat on the table like that could hold the moment still.<\/p>\n<p>He finally looked at me full on for the first time. His eyes were the same as when he was little but older around the edges.\u00a0<span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-quote\">\u201cI did not think you would actually walk in,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n<p>The nurse stood up then and touched my shoulder once before she walked away. Daniel and I sat with the space between us and the lemon smell and the sound of our own breathing.<\/p>\n<div class=\"r34c8-ic-ad\" data-slot=\"2\"><\/div>\n<p>I knew I could not undo the years or the pastor\u2019s words or the nights I drove past the parks without stopping.
