The first time I saw her, she was sitting on the living room floor, quietly stacking blocks, completely focused like the world around her didn\u2019t exist. My wife\u2014well, girlfriend at the time\u2014looked nervous introducing us.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my daughter,\u201d she said softly.<\/p>\n

The little girl looked up at me, studied my face for a second, then went right back to her blocks.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t try too hard. I just sat nearby and started building my own little tower.<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, she slid one of her blocks over to me.<\/p>\n

The drive felt longer than usual. My hands were tight on the wheel, my mind racing through possibilities. Was she okay? Did something happen?<\/p>\n

When I pulled up, she was already outside.<\/p>\n

She got into the car quietly, closed the door, and just sat there for a second.<\/p>\n

\u201cDinner. He said we\u2019d go out. But he got busy\u2026 or something. Then he told me to just watch TV.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her voice was calm, but there was something underneath it.<\/p>\n

Something tired.<\/p>\n

\u201cI waited for like two hours,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want you to be my real dad.\u201d<\/p>\n

That hit me harder than anything ever has.<\/p>\n

Because in my heart, she already was my daughter.<\/p>\n

But hearing her say it\u2026 choosing it\u2026 that was something else.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are my daughter,\u201d I told her. \u201cThat\u2019s never changing.\u201d<\/p>\n

She wiped her eyes quickly, like she didn\u2019t want to make a big deal out of it.<\/p>\n

But I could see the relief.<\/p>\n

The certainty.<\/p>\n

When we got home, she walked in like she belonged there.<\/p>\n

Later that night, after she went to bed, my wife and I sat in the kitchen in silence for a while.<\/p>\n

She covered her mouth, tears in her eyes.<\/p>\n
